Topographs unifies three visual ideas: the consonance of faces and edges with the suspended mass of linearity, the interplay of transparent plane and orthogonal lines, and the interplay of figure and ground surfaces defined by heads and points of the nails.

Intrigued initially by the optical aspects of pierced acrylic sheet, I explored the material by experimenting with piercing patterns, density, and hole roughness and their effects on face and edge appearance. Although those simple forms were elegant, their lack of perfection of craft prevented them from anything beyond studies.
