Outdoor Lamp

This luminaire was designed for social gatherings in an outdoor setting. I observed that the dark patio beckoned guests and that the darkness fostered better conversation, especially among new acquaintances. This project sprang from that experience.

By placing the lamp at foot level the shadows cast are unnatural and the undiffused bulb gives the light and shadows hard edges. As there is a general aversion to look directly toward the filament, conversation occurs at mutually oblique angles to the lamp. Intimacy results, and the lighting allows reserved guests to easily emerge from or retreat to the shadows.
